Who is Rootz Mafiah?

Toronto-based hip hop artist Rootz Mafiah began his musical journey at a young age, rooted in musical theory and mastering instruments like the drums, guitar, violin, and saxophone. Growing up in a music-oriented family, he was deeply influenced by his grandfather, Doug Richardson, a prominent Toronto jazz musician in the late 80s and early 90s. This early exposure shaped Rootz Mafiah’s understanding of great music and sparked his passion for songwriting.

In 2007, Rootz co-founded the group N$B (Never Stop Believing), which collaborated with notable Toronto artists, including Friday Ricky Dread, host of "We Love HipHop Canada," and performed across Toronto, the GTA, and beyond. Their first music video, "Man on a Mission," directed by Fred E Fame, gained traction on YouTube.

Now signed to his independent label, IMG Records, Rootz Mafiah is also part of the dynamic duo "Laneway Mafia" with Da Cosmos. Since their formation in 2018, they’ve released hit singles like "Drip," "Fast & Slow," and "Where I’m Going," showcasing their chemistry and undeniable charisma. While collaborative, Rootz Mafiah’s solo work, including his nostalgic track "1999," reflects his ability to stand strong as an individual artist, drawing inspiration from his life experiences.
